Emergency Maneuvers
Adrenaline is a wonderful thing.
I narrowly avoided an accident on the way home tonight. I don't live far from the office, and end up taking surface roads to and from. My route is a fairly popular one, and there's always a lot of traffic around. Right down the street is a pretty major intersection, where a majority of the traffic (myself included) have to make a left turn onto another big road. So many cars make the same turn that's it's pretty common to see the line of vehicles back up well short of the turn lanes.
Tonight was no exception. Everyone started to stop about a hundred feet before the extra lanes opened up. It was one of those times where traffic slows down much quicker than you'd expect it to, and I ended up breaking a lot harder than I initially planned. I was paying attention, and was in no danger whatsoever of hitting the car in front of me. They guy behind me? Not so much. I'd happened to glance into my mirrors and noticed some headlights flying at me much faster than I'd hoped. Did the math in my head and braced for impact. Tires started to screech. At the last minute I noticed the lane next to me was empty, and quickly swerved over – an instant before the space my Jetta was just in became occupied.
The rest of my drive was in slow motion, and odd side effect to a sudden rush of endorphins.
